“I never thought I’d win.” Now Mal’s livin’ the Golden Beach dream.

467 Winner Blog Hero

Mal was in the middle of an ordinary workday when the phone rang. By the time he hung up, his future looked completely different.

At 58, the Melbourne-born Endeavour Lotteries Member had just found out he’d won Endeavour Lotteries' Prize Home 467, a fully-furnished, $2.8 million home in Golden Beach, just 250 metres from the water.

Most of us imagine we would scream, celebrate or immediately know exactly what to do. For Mal, the real thing felt nothing like the daydream.

“It’s not the way you imagine it to be. Honestly, it’s disbelief mixed with excitement. It takes some time to accept that you’ve won such an amazing prize.”

Still trying to take it all in, Mal told the people around him at work. Then he made the call he could not wait to make, to his daughter.

Hearing her reaction became one of his favourite parts of the entire experience. It was the moment the unbelievable news started to feel just a little more real.

But accepting that he had actually won? That would take a little longer.

By handover day, disbelief had made room for champagne

Mal laughs as he shares a glass of champagne beside his mum in the backyard of his new home.

When handover day arrived, Mal did not walk through the front door alone.

His mum and brother flew up from Melbourne for the occasion. His daughter and grandson joined them too. Four generations of one family were there to see the moment an incredible prize became Mal’s new reality.

With his mum by his side, Mal cut the green ribbon, toured the rooms, collected the keys and popped a bottle of champagne in the backyard.

There were smiles, laughs and plenty of moments where Mal simply stopped to take it all in.

It was more than a home handover. It felt like the beginning of an entirely new family chapter.

“To own such a fantastic home in a great location is a dream come true. I could never have imagined that having a place to call home so close to the water on the Sunshine Coast would be possible.”

The home is undeniably special. But Mal was not just looking at the beautiful rooms, the pool or the short walk to the water.

He was imagining family meals around the table. His grandkids playing in the backyard. His Melbourne family having somewhere beautiful to stay. More visits, more celebrations and more time together.

Because for Mal, the sweetest part of this win is not simply where the home is. It is who it brings him closer to.

The biggest win is being closer to family

Mal’s daughter lives only about 20 minutes from his new Golden Beach home.

That means the win has given him something even more valuable than a new address. It has given him the freedom to be more present for the people who matter most.

“I think this will give me greater freedom to spend more quality time with family, especially my grandkids.”

At 58, Mal says the win could also accelerate his retirement plans. It opens the door to more choices, more time and a future that no longer feels quite so far away.

And while he is still working out exactly what comes next, one thing is already clear. Mal wants his good fortune to reach beyond his own family.

“I’ve been blessed, and I hope that I can also make a difference in people’s lives. I’m still unsure how, but it will come to me eventually.”

That feels especially fitting for someone who originally purchased tickets as a way of supporting a worthy cause, with hope of winning but no real expectation that it would happen to him.

The draw he might have missed

Mal had been an Endeavour Lotteries Member for a little over 12 months, with 30 tickets purchased automatically each month.

Work had been busy in the lead-up to Prize Home 467. If Mal had relied on remembering to purchase individual tickets, he says he probably would not have entered the draw at all.

His membership meant his tickets were already taken care of.

“If I had not been a Member, I would not have been in this draw. Over recent months I had been busy with work, so my membership ensured I had tickets in a draw I probably would have missed.”

Mal never joined expecting a life-changing win.

He saw his tickets as a way to support Endeavour Foundation and help create opportunities for people with intellectual disability. The chance of winning something extraordinary was there, but it never felt like something that would actually happen to him.

Until it did.

“Honestly, I never dreamt that I could really win, but here we are!”

There is something wonderfully simple about Mal’s story.

He was busy working. His membership kept him in the draw. One of his tickets was selected. Then one unexpected phone call changed what was possible for him and his family.

That “someone” who wins every Prize Home is always a real person. This time, it was Mal.

Another Golden Beach dream is waiting

Just a few minutes down the road from Mal’s new home, Prize Home 469 is now open, with another multi-million dollar Golden Beach house waiting for its winner.

If it has already closed by the time you’re reading this, don’t worry. Another sweet chance is never too far away. Endeavour Lotteries opens six incredible Prize Home draws every year, and every home has a guaranteed winner.

Or, become an Endeavour Lotteries Member and never miss a draw. You’ll receive automatic entries into every Prize Home, access exclusive Member-only bonus draws and provide regular support to help Aussies with intellectual disability learn, earn and thrive.

Mal never really believed the life-changing call would come to him, right up until it did.
