From E-Waste to empowered employment, how Shyanne’s story starts with you

In a busy workshop in North Queensland, you’ll find Shyanne tool in hand and focused as she transforms discarded electronics into valuable recyclable materials. And she’s not just breaking down old TVs – she’s breaking barriers.

Shyanne is a supported employee at Endeavour Foundation’s Social Enterprise, where people with disability learn new skills, earn money, and be a valuable part of their local community.

Because of Shyanne’s growing skills in the E-Waste team, she’s been featured in the You Can Make It! book by Manufacturing Skills Queensland, celebrating women making their mark in manufacturing across the state.

“I pull stuff apart. Like TVs and monitors and stuff, getting all the metal out of it. It’s not hard, just with a drill and screws,” Shyanne says casually.

Her story, now shared with students across Queensland through this inspiring book, is living proof that purpose, pride, and practical skills can lead to powerful careers.

After finishing high school, Shyanne didn’t have a set path. Like many young Australians with disability, she was searching for her next step, a place where she could feel included, confident, and make friends.

“I finished Grade 12 and I looked around and came here,” Shyanne said. “It just came up, this one, and I had to look around and walk around to feel like it. And I did.”

And do it she did. Whether she’s outside in the workshop dismantling big old printers or recovering metals from used electronics, Shyanne’s found her rhythm in a hands-on role that suits her strengths.

Her enthusiasm shines through when she describes her role, “I do enjoy the pulling all the bits apart. I love it. I feel really good when I pull things apart.”

The best part? She’s not doing it alone.

“Endeavour [Foundation] is really good. We all get treated the same,” she says. “We all help each other.”

That sense of encouragement and belonging is exactly what Endeavour Foundation creates every day through programs and supported employment opportunities made possible by Endeavour Lottery supporters.
