How to Make 2021 A Cracker!

New Year 2021

It may be a teensy understatement to say that 2020 didn’t quite turn out to be the year it was cracked up to be. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t all plan to make 2021 a cracker.

While the goal posts may be constantly shifting (requiring the agility of a Lions ruckman to navigate), there are still endless opportunities for us to all kick a few goals in 2021 and make it the year we all deserve.

Just like 2020, we all have to be prepared that our 2021 might not look like what we’d envisaged. Hiking to Everest Base Camp may be on hold. Running the Boston Marathon might not be on the cards. And that Thai cooking course in Chang Mai may be many moons away.

But instead of looking to far off places for inspiration, try looking a little closer to home. Literally.

One of the great things to come out of 2020 is rediscovering the joy of simple things. Like growing your very own ripe, bulging tomatoes from seed, or discovering the power of meditation without even setting foot in a yoga studio.

You never know, those shifting goal posts might just push you in a whole new direction and see you challenge yourself in ways you never imagined. But isn’t that a good thing?

So, let’s not think about what could have been and instead, focus on what could lie ahead. We all need something to look forward to and to feel like we’re ‘going somewhere’, even when we’re not.

And that’s why it’s worth starting this next lap around the sun, with a goal or two in mind.

If there was ever a year for making a New Year’s resolution or two, 2021 is it.

New Year’s Resolutions For 2021

A New Year’s resolution can be so much more than blurting out some random, overly ambitious resolution with underwhelming conviction that will be forgotten or abandoned by the time the sun comes up. (Let’s face it, we’ve all been there.)

So take the time to think about what will fill your cup, keep you inspired and give you a real sense of achievement in 2021.

To help, we could offer a list of typical New Year’s Resolutions, however, to be honest, you’ve heard them all before. Exercise more. Eat healthier. Get up earlier. Drink less. Etc. Etc. Etc.

As we’re well aware, 2020 was far from typical. And that’s we’ve put together our list of ‘very 2021’ New Year’s resolutions:

1. Master A Not-So-New Skill

Ukulele sales went through the roof in lockdown. Apparently, more than a few of us were keen to learn how to strum out Somewhere Over the Rainbow with perfect pitch.

If we’re honest, we all have a metaphorical ‘ukelele’ from lockdown. Something we’ve always wanted to learn and decided to have a crack at it while we were all sitting at home. Only problem was, lockdown ended (unless you live in Victoria) before we got past the beginner stage.

So why not make 2021 the year you follow through and genuinely commit to mastering your ‘ukelele’. By year’s end, you might just get that ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ moment and see at least one of your dreams come true.

2. Journey Within

Whatever is going on in the outside world, there’s one place that you can always go: inside.

Now, we don’t mean staying inside at home. Although, technically you can probably go there too. What we’re suggesting is to take a journey within and spend a little time getting to know yourself. Not often do we take the time to really think about who we are, where we’re at in life, how we can take better care of ourselves and how we can see our potential.

There’s more than a book or two out there that could help you on your way so start your journey at the local library or your favourite indy bookshop. You could even enlist the help of a coach to encourage you to delve a little deeper and keep you on the right path.

So why not make 2021 the year of ‘you’. You’re worth it.

3. Go Back to School Without Getting Off The Couch

With the increasing availability of online tertiary study and the more modern ‘choose your own adventure’ programs, it’s never been easier to broaden your horizons by furthering your studies.

But if you’re simply looking to upskill or add a couple of new strings to your bow, online learning communities like Skillshare are the perfect place to start. From flower-arranging to photography there’s a class or course for you.

4. Get to Know Your Own Backyard

The beauty of staying closer to home is having the time to get better acquainted with your home turf. We’re discovering that local spots we might have otherwise overlooked are actually pretty special in their own right. It seems that the grass might even be greener in our own backyard.

Part of getting to know your home better is learning its history. While you’re exploring, make a point of finding out more about Australia’s indigenous heritage and the traditional owners of the country you now inhabit and the places you visit. Friends always feel closer when they know each other’s back story.

In 2021, you could find out who are the traditional owners of your suburb, set a goal to visit 10 local places you’ve never been or journey to a remote part of our continent that has always been on your bucket list. You’ll be glad you did.

5. Take on Endeavour Foundation’s Larapinta Adventure

Speaking of remote parts of our continent, Endeavour Foundations Larapinta Adventure could take you on a journey to explore some of Australia’s Red Centre.

With a select group of equally intrepid adventurers you could be hiking the iconic Larapinta Trail along the ridge lines of the spectacular West MacDonnell Ranges and experience the vast beauty of the outback. All while raising funds to help make possibilities a reality for people with intellectual disability.

The trek doesn’t kick off until August, so you’ll have plenty of time to hit the trails to train and fundraise for the journey.

Could this could be the epic 2021 challenge you’re looking for? Find out more details here.
